Powerhouse Plyometrics

It may sound like the latest action film, but controlled impact and maximum power is the aim for this training technique. Plyometrics also known as jump training involves stretching the muscles prior to contracting them. Exercises are based on the understanding that a concentric (shortening) muscular contraction is much stronger if it immediately follows an eccentric (lengthening) contraction of the same muscle. It’s a bit like stretching out a coiled spring to its fullest extent and then letting it go: immense levels of energy are released in a split second as the spring recoils. This type of training, when used safely and effectively, strengthens muscles, increases vertical jump and decreases impact forces on the joints. Plyometrics mimics the motions we use in sports such as skiing, tennis and basketball. If you enjoy dodging moguls, chasing down ground strokes or charging the net, plyometrics might be an appropriate training option. These exercises are designed to increase muscular power and explosiveness. Plyometrics is not, however, for everyone. Urban offers a safe and effective plyometric program that stresses the quality, not quantity, of the moves, jumps and safe landing techniques.
